Perimenopause & Menopause Symptoms

Symptoms often start in your 40s and can last for years. Women who come to our Webster office are usually dealing with several perimenopause and menopause symptoms at once:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Waking up at night or trouble falling asleep
  • Irritability, anxiety or low mood
  • Brain fog and low energy
  • Achy joints and muscles
  • Vaginal dryness or painful sex
  • Bladder urgency or discomfort
  • Lower sex drive

These changes are a normal part of midlife, and they are treatable.

Perimenopause & Menopause Treatment in Webster and Clear Lake

Hormone therapy restores some of the estrogen your body makes less of. It is a well-established treatment for hot flashes and night sweats, and many women also notice better sleep and a steadier mood.

In perimenopause, estrogen swings up and down, and you may notice irregular cycles, new hot flashes, restless nights or mood changes in your 40s. These are common perimenopause symptoms. HRT+ treats perimenopause, not only menopause. If you are still having periods, your provider uses a progesterone schedule made for perimenopause. Hormone therapy does not prevent pregnancy, so we do a quick pregnancy test in the office before you begin.

Treatment at our Webster office begins with an in-person evaluation. From there, your plan is adjusted at each visit based on how you are feeling.

Menopause Weight Gain and GLP-1 Care in Webster

It is common for weight to creep up in your 40s and 50s even when your eating has not changed. Lower estrogen shifts fat toward the waist, muscle mass declines, and poor sleep makes cravings harder to manage.

Hormone therapy is not a weight loss treatment, which is why HRT+ includes GLP-1 weight loss care for women who take a GLP-1 medication. Your hormones and your weight are managed by one team under one monthly fee. You can read more about menopause weight gain, or visit our Webster weight loss office page.

Bioidentical Hormone Therapy (BHRT) in Webster

Here is what sets HRT+ apart at our Webster office:

  • Hormones that match your ownThe estradiol and micronized progesterone we prescribe are bioidentical, meaning they match the hormones your body makes. If you have a uterus, progesterone protects its lining.

  • A skin patch for most womenEstradiol through the skin is simple to adjust, and studies suggest it carries a lower risk of blood clots than estrogen pills.

  • Small, steady adjustmentsYou complete a short symptom questionnaire at each visit, and your dose is adjusted one step at a time.

  • A yearly whole-health checkYour yearly General Health Panel covers your blood count, liver, kidneys, blood sugar, cholesterol and thyroid. Thyroid problems can look a lot like menopause, so we check for them from the start.

  • We do not sell your medicationWe do not sell or dispense medication. Your prescriptions are sent to your pharmacy.

  • Safety in perspectiveWomen who begin hormone therapy before age 60, or within 10 years of menopause, have a more favorable balance of benefits and risks than the early headlines suggested. Read more about hormone therapy safety.

Testosterone for Women in Webster

For some women, a lasting drop in sexual desire after menopause is part of the picture. Your provider looks at other causes first, such as dryness, poor sleep, hot flashes or medications. For some women, a low dose of testosterone may then help.

Who it is for. Women 45 and older who are past menopause, whose low desire has lasted at least six months, bothers them, and is a change from their normal. There is no upper age limit.

The product. There is no testosterone product made specifically for women in the United States. Your provider prescribes a low-dose cream from a compounding pharmacy, used off-label.

Safety checks. Your testosterone level is checked before you start and during treatment to keep it in a normal range for women. If it has not helped by six months, we stop it.

Cost. Testosterone management and level checks are part of your HRT+ monthly fee. You pay the pharmacy for the cream.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT), also called menopause hormone therapy, gives back some of the estrogen your body makes less of in perimenopause and menopause. In HRT+, that usually means a bioidentical estradiol patch, with progesterone for women who have a uterus.

How do I know if I need hormone replacement therapy?

If hot flashes, night sweats, poor sleep, mood changes, brain fog or vaginal dryness are getting in the way of your daily life, it is worth being evaluated. Your provider bases the decision on your symptoms and health history rather than a blood test.

Do you offer hormone replacement therapy in Webster?

Yes. Our Webster office at 17630 State Hwy 3 offers HRT+, hormone replacement therapy for women in perimenopause and menopause, along with GLP-1 weight loss care. If you are looking for a menopause doctor in Webster, your care is overseen by John Bergeron, MD, and provided by your physician or Nurse Practitioner.

Do you offer hormone replacement therapy near Clear Lake?

Yes. Our Webster office is minutes from Clear Lake and Nassau Bay, and many of our hormone therapy patients live in the Clear Lake area.

Do you offer bioidentical hormones (BHRT) in Webster?

Yes. We prescribe bioidentical estradiol and micronized progesterone, which match the hormones your body makes.

Is hormone replacement therapy safe?

For most healthy women who begin before age 60 or within 10 years of menopause, the benefits of hormone therapy outweigh the risks. It still carries some risk and is not right for every woman. Your provider reviews your health history and personal risks before you start, and you are seen at least every 3 months while on treatment.

Does hormone therapy cause breast cancer?

In a large study of estrogen plus a synthetic progestin, there were about 8 extra cases of breast cancer per 10,000 women each year, a small increase. After the researchers adjusted for other breast cancer risk factors, the difference was no longer statistically significant, meaning it could have been due to chance. Women who took estrogen alone did not have a higher breast cancer risk. If you have had breast cancer, we refer you to a specialist for hormone decisions.

Does hormone therapy cause weight gain?

Research has not shown that estrogen therapy causes weight gain, and it may help limit belly fat after menopause. Weight often changes around menopause for other reasons, which is why HRT+ includes GLP-1 weight loss care.

Will hormone therapy help me lose weight?

Not by itself. Hormone therapy treats menopause symptoms, and better sleep can make healthy habits easier to keep. For weight loss, HRT+ includes GLP-1 care for women who take a GLP-1 medication.

How much does HRT cost in Webster?

The HRT+ evaluation is $199 and includes your baseline labs. The membership is $129 a month, starting 30 days after your evaluation. It covers hormone management, GLP-1 care if you take a GLP-1, all follow-up visits and yearly labs. Medication is paid to your pharmacy.

Is hormone replacement therapy covered by insurance or Medicare?

HRT+ is cash pay, and we do not bill insurance or Medicare. Your prescriptions go to your pharmacy, where your prescription drug plan may help with medication costs.

Can I start HRT if I am still having periods?

Yes. Many women begin treatment in perimenopause while their periods continue. We do a quick pregnancy test in the office before you start, since hormone therapy is not birth control.

What is the best age to start hormone therapy?

Women who start before 60, or within 10 years of menopause, have the most favorable balance of benefits and risks. Most women start in their mid 40s to early 50s, when symptoms begin to affect daily life. New patients can start estrogen and progesterone with us between ages 45 and 59.

How soon will I feel better on hormone therapy?

Hot flashes and sleep often begin to improve within a few weeks, and the full effect can take about three months. Your first check-in is at 6 weeks so your provider can adjust your plan.

Is there a limit on how long I can take hormone therapy?

No. There is no set stopping age. At your yearly in-person visit, you and your provider decide together whether to continue. If you stop, your dose is tapered gradually.

Do I need a hormone blood test to start HRT?

No. Menopause hormone therapy is guided by your symptoms, not hormone levels. Your evaluation includes a General Health Panel covering your blood count, liver, kidneys, blood sugar, cholesterol and thyroid. A testosterone level is checked before testosterone is prescribed.

Do you offer testosterone for women in Webster?

Yes, for women 45 and older who are past menopause and have low sexual desire that bothers them. Your level is checked before and during treatment, and we stop it if it has not helped by six months. Testosterone management is included in your HRT+ fee.

Do I have to come to the Webster office for every visit?

Your first HRT+ evaluation is in person at our Webster office. After that, many follow-up visits can be a phone call or virtual follow-up, with an in-person visit once a year.

Do you see patients from Friendswood, League City, Pearland and Galveston?

Yes. Women come to our Webster office from Friendswood, League City, Pearland, Galveston, Clear Lake, Seabrook, Kemah, Dickinson and across the Bay Area.
