Medicare’s New GLP-1 Bridge: Covered GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications for $50 a Month

As of July 1, 2026, there’s a new way for people with Medicare to access GLP-1 weight loss medications for a flat $50 per month. It’s called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge — a nationwide demonstration program from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) running through December 31, 2027. At Houston Weight Loss Center, we help qualifying patients across Houston, Katy, and Webster take advantage of it, which includes preparing and submitting the required prior authorization.

Here’s what the program is, who qualifies, and how our team can help you access it.

What is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary CMS program that gives eligible Medicare Part D members access to certain GLP-1 medications used for weight management for a fixed $50 copay per month regardless of income. It is available nationwide, including here in Texas, as of July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027.

Historically, Medicare drug plans have not covered GLP-1 medications when they’re prescribed purely for weight loss. The Bridge is designed to close that gap on a temporary basis while CMS studies the results.

Which medications are covered?

The Bridge covers certain FDA-approved GLP-1 medications prescribed for weight management; however, not every GLP-1, and not every formulation is included. The covered list is set by CMS and can change over the course of the program. During your consultation, our physician-supervised team will confirm which covered medication is appropriate for you and eligible under the program.

Who qualifies?

To be eligible for the $50 copay through the Bridge, a person generally must meet all of the following:

  • Be enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan — either a standalone prescription drug plan (PDP) or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage (MA-PD).
  • Be 18 or older.
  • Not currently getting a GLP-1 covered through their Medicare drug plan and does not qualify for GLP-1 coverage under Part D for another reason, such as type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease (MASH). Those conditions are covered separately through Part D.
  • Meet the weight-management clinical criteria (measured at the time GLP-1 therapy was first started):
    • BMI of 35 or higher, or
    • BMI of 30 or higher with heart failure (preserved ejection fraction), uncontrolled high blood pressure, or chronic kidney disease (stage 3a or above), or
    • BMI of 27 or higher with prediabetes, a previous heart attack, a previous stroke, or symptomatic peripheral artery disease.

Eligibility is ultimately determined by CMS and its processor, not by our clinic. The official eligibility checker is at Medicare.gov/glp1bridge, and Medicare can be reached at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

What the $50 copay does (and doesn’t) include

We want you to have the full picture before you get started, so there are no surprises:

  • The $50 is your total monthly out-of-pocket cost for a covered medication under the Bridge, no matter your income.
  • It sits outside your regular Part D benefit. That means the $50 does not count toward your drug plan deductible or your yearly out-of-pocket maximum, and low-income subsidies do not apply to it.
  • Once approved, your prior authorization is generally valid through December 31, 2027 (including refills and dose changes) unless you switch to a different GLP-1.
  • Additional coupons or discount cards can’t be stacked to lower the $50 further.

How Houston Weight Loss Center helps you access the Bridge

Houston Weight Loss Center is a cash-based clinic, and we do not bill Medicare for office visits. Your visits with us are self-pay, as they always have been. That doesn’t stop us from helping you get your medication covered.

In the Bridge program, a prescriber does not need to be enrolled in Medicare to write the prescription or submit the prior authorization. This is precisely why our physician-supervised, cash-based practice can help you tap into this benefit. If you qualify, our team will:

  • Evaluate whether a covered GLP-1 medication is appropriate for you as part of a structured plan that includes nutrition and physical activity.
  • Prepare and submit your prior authorization to the program’s central processor and send your prescription to your pharmacy.
  • Guide you on the next steps so you can pick up your medication at your pharmacy for the $50 monthly copay once you’re approved.

As always, our recommendations are physician-supervised and grounded in what’s medically appropriate for you — the same standard we’ve held since 1996 as Houston’s leaders in metabolic medicine.
